Denture Care

The best care for dentures will guarantee that dentures last and do what you expect them to do. It only makes sense to take special care of dentures, since they are not only expensive to replace, but take a considerable amount of time and trouble when it comes to those dreaded dental appointments.

To be honest I do not have dentures, but my mother does and I take care of her dentures at this time, because she had a stroke and cannot do it herself. I have been taking care of her dentures for 3 years now and have used just about every denture product on the market whether it's for cleaning or securing.

Those are the two biggies when it comes to dentures; keeping them clean and making sure that they are secure. Otherwise, you open yourself to problems with oral hygiene and gum disease. The mouth is a moist dark place, which is prime breeding ground for bacteria to get out of control, which doesn't take long.

Brushing dentures after each meal is the best way to keep them clean, but if not then at least brush twice a day and always use a soft bristle brush designed for brushing dentures. Chewing gum that is specifically for denture wearers is the next best way to clean them when you cannot brush after a meal.

Soaking dentures in Efferdent or some other brand of denture cleanser overnight is also recommended. The main thing is to keep them moist when they are not in the mouth, so that they do not dry out and lose shape. The water should be tepid, not hot or cold, this way they're not exposed to drastic temperature changes.

It is also important to rinse mouth daily with some type of mouth wash or warm salt water to take care of gums, tongue and in general the inside of the mouth.

At some point and time gums will recede and you will need to use some type of denture adhesive to keep teeth secure. Sometimes even new dentures don't fit quite right and until you can get to the dentist something is better than nothing.

Nobody wants to use denture adhesives and most of them taste terrible and don't work well, however, as mentioned above something is better than nothing.

When it comes to choosing denture adhesives it is mostly a matter of preference and some trial and error. I can tell you that pastes and creams are the worst, so don't mess with them unless you can't get anything else.

Denture adhesive strips and powders are a much better option my mother seems to prefer them. Keep in mind that denture adhesives are meant to be temporary until the dentist can adjust the dentures for a more secure fit.

If you do need to use adhesives for a lengthy period of time then you might want to go with a denture liner kit as they tend to last longer and do an excellent job.

Below is a list of denture adhesives and denture cleaners that you can check out on Amazon that have positive reviews and ratings. The list only contains the products that I have used personally for my mother's dentures.

This way you get the best care for dentures that you can possibly can; by using the best products on the market as well as using them consistently.
