Best Hair Scrunching Gel

How to Scrunch

The best hair scrunching gel for one person may not be the best for another and the main reason for this is the texture of the hair. The biggest issue is whether the hair is thick or fine when it comes to using gel for scrunching the hair. Many women with fine hair might be better off using mousse since it isn't as heavy.

This isn't to say that women with fine hair can't get their hair to look its best when using hair gel for scrunching, because they can, they just need to dilute the gel considerably more than a person with thick hair and use it sparingly.

Before we get into the best hair scrunching gel products, which are further down, let's first make sure that you're scrunching hair properly. After all, if you don't know proper technique the best hair styling gel won't do you much good.

Seeing that I have been a hairstylist since 1983 and have scrunched so many heads of hair that I lost count ages ago I think I know how it's done.

First of all you don't need to shampoo hair to scrunch, but it does need to be wet. Next you need to be sure that you have towel dried hair by blotting or squeezing so that hair is not full of water. When hair is full of water gel cannot penetrate as well or not at all. You should be able to squeeze hair and no water come out.

Think of it this way, when there is too much water left in the hair the hair gel is diluted more than it should rendering it ineffective. Once you add gel to the hair the water and gel mix and the gel is diluted as is mousse and other styling aids.

With this in mind if you want hair gel diluted, or made weaker add water, but if you want gel to be stronger get rid of water by towel drying hair more it's that simple.

Once you apply the gel comb it through not just pick it or finger it or whatever. When you comb hair gel through it distributes evenly, which is very important as far as the finished look. Once you comb hair gel through then you pick it.

Hair picking is to separate curls not to distribute gel. Whether hair is thick or fine extensive curl separation is crucial, especially if you want to dry hair faster. Big clumps of curls take forever to dry and don't hold curl as well.

Using a hair diffuser works well to keep curl from looking frizzy as you scrunch and drying hair upside down for volume is a must. Additionally, the more curl you want the tighter you need to squeeze the curls as you dry the hair.

One more tip for scrunching hair is to move quickly from one side to the other back and forth don't stay on one side for long or curls on one side will look really good and the other side will look weak or more like a wave than a curl.

Okay, so much for hair scrunching tips it's time to move on to the most popular and best hair scrunching gel to make hair styling faster and easier.

Best Hair Scrunching Gel- Brands Prices

Keep in mind that those with fine hair will fare better with spray gels, since spray gel is not as heavy. Naturally, you can dilute thicker gels by mixing them with water either in the hands when applying or by water left in the hair.

One of my favorite gels for scrunching hair is Kenra Firm Hold Styling Fixative it's only $6 for a 6 oz. tube and it lasts forever due to being so concentrated. I dilute it quite a bit by mixing it with water in the hands. There are 2 reviews on Amazon with an almost 5 star rating, so if you don't believe me check them out.

I am big on alternating hair products and I mean all of them, so I alternate hair gels and one of the alternates is Biolage Bodifying Spray Gel. It is medium hold, not strong like the Kenra, so not as much dilution is needed, price is $11 for 8 oz. This is an excellent product with no mess on the hands just spray and scrunch.

For all Paul Mitchell fans this one is for you. The Paul Mitchell Super Clean Sculpting Gel is another amazing gel for scrunching hair. It is not as firm as the Kenra, but if you like go for the Firm Hold Super Clean it's just as good. Amazon has reviews on both and both have high ratings, price $15-$20 for 16 oz.

Lastly, if you want more volume then try the Sebastian Volume Building Spray Gel it's a little pricey, so you may consider it high end at $23 for 5 oz, however, a little goes a long way, very nice for special occasions like maybe a wedding or prom!

There you have it 4 of the best hair scrunching gel brands on the market, so read the reviews and see for yourself how excellent they really are.
