Short Fine Hair Styling Tips

The best styling products for short fine hair can make a huge difference in the finished style and look. Let me tell you how I know. I know, first of all, because I have been a stylist since 1983 and second I have short fine hair and style it everyday.

I say CAN make a difference because while hair products can ultimately make a big difference you have to know how to use those products. Hair products by themselves are worthless without the knowledge of how to use them effectively.

The quality of the hair products for short fine hair is also of major importance. A person with natural thick hair that has body doesn't have to worry as much about the quality of hair products since their hair can look good using most anything.

In addition, if you have fine short hair that is chemically treated such as hair color or perm then you really need quality products. Fine hair that is colored or permed is fragile and needs to be treated as such or it can break off or fall out.

Quality styling hair products are typically professional hair styling products such as Matrix, Paul Mitchell, Kenra, Sebastian etc. Yes, they do cost more, but they also last longer because they're concentrated and they really are better.

When you use the best hair styling products for short fine hair the style will last longer, possibly the entire day without fussing with it. Once I style my hair it stays until I go to bed that night and when I get up it still looks almost the same.

My hair is very short and it is color treated, so I use the best styling products and alternate them. Alternating hair styling products is another trick you can use to keep your style looking good. For example, I have 3 shampoos and never use the same one twice in a row. I do the same with mousse gel and hairspray.

The reason for alternating hair styling products is due to hair getting used to the same product and not responding to it any more. Further, you don't want build up or hair will get heavy dull and lifeless, which results in bad hair days.

I hope you're paying attention here, because these are some of the best hair styling tips you can get for free from a hairdresser. I have nothing to gain by telling you any of this, so the wise thing to do is implement them.

Stay with me, since next we will get into actual styling of short fine thin hair and which hair styling products work best and why.

Styling Products for Short Fine Hair

Styling short fine hair starts with the shampoo not with an actual styling aid. The shampoo used makes a difference, so start with a volumizing shampoo. Even if you don't style hair with much volume it still makes the hair appear thicker.

My favorites are Paul Mitchell Shampoo One or Awahpui, Matrix Biolage Hydrating Shampoo, Vavoom Volumizing Shampoo and Tigi Bed Head Superstar. Naturally, I alternate these and add a new one now and then to try it out.

I never use a conditioner. Did I say never? Oh I meant never! No need for short fine hair to be conditioned unless you have damaged it severely. Mousse contains conditioning agents, so if you feel hair is dry use mousse as an alternate.

I do use mousse and my favorites are Vavoom Volumizing Foam, Sebastian Mousse Forte and Tigi Catwalk Fashionista Volumizing Foam. All of these are excellent for styling short fine hair as well as to add a tad of conditioning.

Don't forget to alternate with gel every other shampoo. My best gel picks for short fine hair are Gelee Firm Hold by Matrix, Kenra Firm Hold Gel and Paul Mitchell Extra Body Sculpting Gel. Use small amounts and mix with water in hands to dilute before applying and always brush or comb through before blow drying.

Always brush or comb gel and mousse through hair before blow drying to ensure complete and even coverage. This is a very important step, so don't skip it!

Finally, there is hair spray to get the finished look to hold. Don't make the mistake of overkill styling short fine hair when it comes to hairspray. While it may look good at that moment it will fall later with no hope of fluffing it back up.

Aerosol is your best friend for overall coverage my favorites are Vavoom Freezing Spray it is the best, Tigi Bed Head Rush Aerosol Spray Shine and Kenra Volume Super Hold Finishing Spray. Spray 7-10 inches away or you'll get clumps like a pump spray, however, you can spray close to the roots for extra lift.

Now you know the best styling products for short fine hair it's time to put them to work and keep your cute short hair cut looking fabulous.
